Where Ahmedabad gets dressed
The markets, streets and neighbourhoods that set the tone for street fashion in Ahmedabad, and what each one is good for.
Law Garden
The evening market for chaniya cholis, mirror work and oxidised jewellery. Peak season is the month before Navratri.
Sindhu Bhavan Road
The new cafe strip where the city goes to be seen.
CG Road
The established high street for brands.
Old city pols and Ratan Pol
Narrow lanes of fabric and wedding shopping near Manek Chowk.
What the weather allows
Long, dry and very hot summers, a short monsoon and a pleasant winter. Loose cotton and khadi are the practical answer, which is convenient, because this is where much of it comes from.
When the city dresses up
Navratri. Nine nights of garba, a different outfit for each, and months of planning. Uttarayan, the kite festival in January, is the other day the whole city spends on its terraces.
Names to know
Ajrakh and bandhani from Kutch, mashru, and khadi with its history at the Sabarmati Ashram. The design schools in the city keep turning these into clothes that do not look like costume.
Shops and labels change. This was last checked in September 2026. If something here has closed, moved or opened, tell us and we will fix it.
The Ahmedabad fit
An indigo block print shirt with wide white trousers. During Navratri, a full kediyu or a mirror work chaniya choli, with sneakers underneath because nine nights is a lot of dancing.

Ahmedabad can also take its place in the weekly city battles, where fits are rated blind and the result comes out on Sunday. How city battles work
