Where Chennai gets dressed
The markets, streets and neighbourhoods that set the tone for street fashion in Chennai, and what each one is good for.
T Nagar
Pondy Bazaar and Ranganathan Street. The densest shopping in the city, and the silk houses the rest of the country travels for.
Khader Nawaz Khan Road
A short, leafy stretch of boutiques and cafes in Nungambakkam.
Besant Nagar
Evenings at Elliot's Beach. College crowd, easy clothes, sea breeze.
Sowcarpet
Wholesale lanes in the old town for fabric, trims and jewellery.
What the weather allows
Hot and humid for most of the year, with the rain coming late, from October to December. Pure cotton and linen are the default. A crisp white veshti still looks sharper than most trousers in this climate, and everybody here knows it.
When the city dresses up
Margazhi, the music season in December and January, is when the city brings out its best silks for the sabhas. Pongal follows in mid January.
Names to know
Kanchipuram, where the silk comes from, is about two hours away. Younger Chennai wears it cut up and restyled: a silk border on a shirt, a half sari with sneakers.
Shops and labels change. This was last checked in September 2026. If something here has closed, moved or opened, tell us and we will fix it.
The Chennai fit
A loose linen shirt, pleated trousers and leather sandals. Or a Kanchipuram silk skirt with a plain white tee, which is the city in one outfit.
Would you rate it?Chennai on Vybemo
A fit posted from Chennai is rated out of 10 by real people across India. After 48 hours it is scored. The number stays with the person who posted it, and the public sees a word. How the rating works
Chennai can also take its place in the weekly city battles, where fits are rated blind and the result comes out on Sunday. How city battles work
